OpenAI has released GPT-6.1 Terra, a fast model built for computer use, reading images, and writing. Computer use means the model operates software the way a person would, for example filling out forms or entering invoice details into accounting software. OpenAI says Terra’s standard API prices are 50% lower than those of GPT-5.6 Terra and GPT-6.1 Sol.
What OpenAI reports
OpenAI measured Terra on Agents’ Last Exam, a benchmark of professional tasks such as turning architectural drawings into a 3D model. At medium reasoning effort, OpenAI says Terra scores 15 percentage points higher than GPT-5.6 Terra at about one-third the cost. It also says Terra completes tasks over three times faster than GPT-6 Astra and GPT-6.1 Sol.
Vercel’s AI Gateway listing adds that OpenAI still recommends its larger GPT-6 models for the most complex coding. GitHub describes Terra as suited to everyday agentic coding and terminal work on well-scoped tasks, and reports from early testing that it solved noticeably more terminal and C# tasks than GPT-5.6 Terra. Results on your own projects may differ.
In ChatGPT Work and Codex, OpenAI says the same usage allowance covers more tasks with Terra than with GPT-5.6 Terra.
Where you can pick it
GitHub says Terra is generally available in Copilot for Pro, Pro+, Max, Business, and Enterprise users. It appears in the model picker in Visual Studio Code, JetBrains IDEs, Xcode, Copilot CLI, the cloud agent, github.com, and GitHub Mobile. The rollout is gradual, so it may not show up for you yet. Copilot bills it at the provider’s list price. Business and Enterprise administrators control access through the model policy in Copilot settings, and new models are enabled by default unless the administrator turned that default off.
Vercel added it to AI Gateway under the name openai/gpt-6.1-terra. The model takes text and images, returns text, and has a context window above 1M tokens. A faster variant is openai/gpt-6.1-terra-fast. Vercel says you can select it in Codex and Cursor after installing the latest Vercel CLI and running its setup.
GPT-5.6 Terra is on a clock
If your Copilot setup or saved settings still point at GPT-5.6 Terra, it is removed from Copilot on November 16. Review those settings and choose an available replacement before then. Terra adds an option for well-scoped work; the larger models remain relevant for complex coding tasks.
