What happened

Anthropic is changing which Claude subscriptions include Fable 5 as a standard benefit.

Beginning July 20, Fable 5 will be included with Max and Team Premium plans at 50% of limits. Pro and Team Standard users will continue to access the model through usage credits. Those users will also receive a one-time $100 credit.

The announcement replaces weeks of temporary extensions with a clearer division between plans. Anthropic said demand for Fable 5 had been difficult to predict. It rolled out subscription access in stages as it secured more capacity.

The change does not make Fable 5 part of every paid subscription. Max and Team Premium receive continuing plan access. Pro and Team Standard remain on usage credits after the one-time credit runs out.

Anthropic also resolved a 30-minute availability issue on July 18. Fable 5 temporarily disappeared from the model picker in Claude.ai and Claude Code.

Claude Code users may need to restart the application after the fix. If Fable 5 is not selected, they can choose it again with the /model command.

Some users with extra usage enabled may have been charged during the incident. Anthropic says it will refund affected credits. It will also grant an additional credit equal to the amount charged.

Why it matters

Model access is becoming part of how coding-agent subscriptions are differentiated. A plan no longer buys only more messages or a larger general allowance. It can also determine whether a particular model is included at all.

The distinction matters because a temporary credit can resemble included access for a short period. The experience changes after that credit is gone. Pro users should not treat the $100 credit as a permanent increase in their subscription allowance.

Anthropic’s capacity explanation is also useful context. The repeated extensions were not presented as a settled plan benefit. They were part of a staged rollout while the company measured demand and added capacity.

This makes plan comparisons harder. Builders need to compare the normal allowance, model eligibility, and metered usage. A promotional credit only describes what the subscription supports right now.

The billing incident adds another practical concern. When extra usage is enabled, a model-selection problem can become a credit charge rather than only an interruption. Refund handling is therefore part of the product experience.

Who should care

Max and Team Premium users now have more certainty about Fable 5 access after July 20. They should still note that Anthropic describes the inclusion as 50% of limits.

Pro and Team Standard users should separate the one-time $100 credit from their recurring plan benefits. Continued Fable 5 use will draw from usage credits.

Claude Code users with extra usage enabled should also review their credit balance. This is especially important if they tried to select Fable 5 during the July 18 incident.

What builders should do next

Check which Claude plan you use before planning work around Fable 5. Confirm that the model appears in Claude.ai or Claude Code after July 20.

If the model is missing in Claude Code, restart the application and run /model. Users affected by the outage should then check whether Anthropic applied both the refund and matching additional credit.

Do not use the one-time credit to estimate the normal value of a Pro or Team Standard plan. Track how quickly Fable 5 consumes paid credits after the promotion ends.

The practical takeaway is simple. Model quality matters, but reliable access determines whether builders can make that model part of a repeatable workflow.
